MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE OUTCOME OF THE ANC VETERANS’ LEAGUE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING OF 29 -30 MAY 2026

The ANC Veterans’ League held its quarterly NEC meeting on 29 to 30 May 2026, focusing on the current conjuncture, the forthcoming local government elections, and organisational matters within the ANC and the Veterans’ League.

The meeting was also addressed by the ANC Secretary General (SG), Cde Fikile Mbalula – link to the ANC SG’s address https://www.youtube.com/live/IwDesKlEB7Y?si=X4G3KDHUHvHNDQhr.

The Veterans League noted with concern the threats and attacks on foreign nationals in our country and sought to contextualise these attacks within the broader geopolitical situation. “We all need to be concerned about these attacks and respond pro-actively,” said Snuki Zikalala, ANC President.

“The government must act decisively against unlawful behaviour and enforce immigration and labour laws, while employers must not seek to exploit undocumented workers, and political parties conveniently place the blame for our economic challenges on migrants”.

In respect of the forthcoming local government elections, the VL NEC committed its members to

be active in the campaign, supporting door-to-door work and outreach to the elderly.

“It is only by fixing local government and delivering services that a demonstrably renewed ANC

with competent, capable leaders of unquestionable integrity will restore public confidence in the

ANC and to improve our electoral fortunes”, said Zikalala.

The VL NEC supported the ANC NEC’s decision to centralise the selection of Mayoral

candidates for 46 municipalities, with stringent criteria, quality, and qualification requirements.

The VL has submitted names of mayoral candidates in most of these areas, identifying

individuals with strong track records and unblemished reputations, who would be electable and

acceptable to ANC members.

The meeting welcomed the decision of the ANC NEC to take disciplinary action against five

senior ANC members, including the WL President, Sisisi Tolashe, on the recommendations of

the Integrity Committee.“We still call on these individuals to step aside on their own volition, said Zikalala. “In addition,

the ANC NEC must deal with the outstanding cases from the Zondo Commission and

strengthen the terms of reference of the Integrity Commission and Step Aside Guidelines

Resolutions of the NEC, to continue to act decisively against wrongdoing in our ranks.”

At an organisational level, the VL NEC confirmed the outcomes of the KZN VL Provincial

Conference, approved the filling of vacancies in the Free State VL Provincial Executive

Committee and the establishment of a VL provincial task team in the North West Province and

regional task teams in Mangaung and Nkangala. The meeting noted the continual growth in VL

membership, which now stands at 4689.

The meeting recognised the challenges faced by the ANC and the VL committed to intensifying

its efforts to renew and rebuild the ANC, and to fighting for and restoring public confidence in

the ANC’s policies and programmes.
