Statement
Response to the announcement by President Ramaphosa on the Establishment of a Commission of Inquiry into allegations regarding law enforcement agencie
- 14 July 2025
The ANC Veterans’ League welcomes the announcement by President Ramaphosa to establish a comprehensive commission of inquiry led by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Mdlanga to investigate the infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence and associated institutions within the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates.
The tough stance against allegations of corruption and subversion of law enforcement agencies that the President has taken is the right approach.
We further welcome the appointment of Prof. Firoz Cachalia as Acting Minister of Police, which will enable the continuation of the process of rebuilding and strengthening law enforcement in our country.
Lastly, we welcome the Minister’s undertaking to cooperate with the Commission. The widespread response by members of the public to the allegations levelled last weekend by Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwananzi reflects the serious concerns we all share about crime, lawlessness, and the need for effective policing. It is thus of critical importance that the Commission undertakes its work speedily and effectively, within the timeframes set by the President.
One of the key challenges facing the Acting Minister, Cachalia, is to ensure that the responsible police agencies effectively investigate recent assassinations of individuals like the forensic auditor from Ekurhuleni municipality, Mpho Mafole, who are brave enough to follow up on allegations of crime and corruption in government.
When no one is arrested and convicted for this crime, as well as assassinations of councillors, as happened to Tshwane Councillor, Thabang Masemola, last week, it emboldens others intent on subverting the state and the taxpayers’ money. The Commission’s recommendations should also consider proactive measures to protect whistleblowers and safeguard law enforcement agencies from infiltration by organised crime.
