A reflection of the 1976: Freedom Park and struggle veterans hosts intergenerational dialogue commemorating the 50th anniversary of June 16th.

As South Africa and the world remember and recall the historic 1976 national uprisings, the ANC Veterans’ League will mark the 50anniversary through an intergenerational dialogue on Monday, 15 June 2026, at the Freedom Park National Heritage site in Pretoria Under the theme: “Political mobilisation and organisation: Reflecting on the June 16th for the youth of today”, the dialogue, which includes a book fair and film screenings, is a platform and opportunity to reflect on the June 16th moment and the current state of society and youth. It will be led by a keynote address by ANC veteran Cde Mac Maharaj, followed by a panel discussion and audience interactive discussion with leaders from different generations. “We are convening to reflect on more than five decades of the evolution of the youth and student movement – and a sombre intergenerational reflection between veterans, current leadership and the youth of today”, said Dr Snuki Zikalala, President of the ANC Veterans League. “As part of the national Youth Month celebrations, we aim to contribute to the national discourse on “what can provoke a political awakening and active citizenry amongst the youth of today”.

The panellists and the intergenerational audience are a kaleidoscope of voices chronicling the dynamic role of the various student and youth formations, including from National Union of  South African Students (NUSAS), South African Youth Congress (SAYCO), Azanian Student Organisation (Azaso) South African National Students Congress (SANSCO), Young Christian Students (YCS), the ANC Youth League, and Congress of South African Students (COSAS) amongst others.“Freedom Park, a priceless national memorial for immortalising the struggle for democracy and human rights, is a befitting space to hold this dialogue”, said Dr Zikalala.Members of the invited to attend as follows: Date: Monday 15 June 2026 Time: 16:00 to 19:00 Venue: Freedom Park (Amphitheatre and Sanctuary), Salvo Kop, Pretoria.
